Corey Seager Awaits Return to Action After Appendectomy

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager is in the process of recovering after undergoing an appendectomy, showing optimism about his possible return to the field this season. Although the two-time World Series Most Valuable Player cannot provide an exact date, he remains hopeful of playing again with the Rangers in their pursuit of the playoffs.

“I have to think it’s possible… or it won’t be,” Seager said in his first public statements after the intervention on August 28.

Although Seager is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list this Sunday, the player confirmed that it will not be possible. In addition to Seager’s situation, the Rangers placed Adolis García on the 10-day injured list due to a right quadriceps strain, a move retroactive to Tuesday. To cover these absences, the team called up outfielder Dustin Harris from Triple-A Round Rock and moved right-handed pitcher Jon Gray to the 60-day injured list due to irritation in the nerve of his right shoulder. Seager has researched athletes who have returned after an appendectomy.

“I feel like I’ve seen very different results,” he said. “It was very fast or not so much.”

Seager recalled the case of Matt Holliday, who returned to the St. Louis Cardinals’ lineup as a designated hitter nine days after an appendectomy in 2011. He also mentioned cases of basketball players who returned in three weeks.

“But there’s no rotation and stuff, so I don’t know if that changes things because of the location of the incisions,” Seager commented. “I really don’t know.”

Seager’s appendectomy occurred one day after he experienced abdominal pain during the Rangers’ last home game, where he hit his 21st home run of the season. The player reported that the pain progressively intensified, and doctors informed him that he was 48 hours away from his appendix rupturing. The Rangers began the series against the Astros five games behind the division leaders and 1.5 games out of the last American League wild card spot. Other injured Rangers players include second baseman Marcus Semien (left foot) and right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (right rotator cuff strain).
