Miguel Cairo Assumes Interim Manager Role for the Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals have appointed Miguel Cairo, their *bench coach*, as interim manager, the team announced this Monday. Cairo, with a 17-season career in MLB, where he played for nine teams between 1996 and 2012, takes over from Dave Martinez. The change in direction comes after the firing of Martinez, along with general manager Mike Rizzo, on Sunday. Cairo joined the Nationals in 2024, after serving as minor league infield coordinator for the New York Mets the previous season. Previously, he was the bench coach for the Chicago White Sox during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. In addition, he was interim manager for the last 34 games of the 2022 season, achieving an 18-16 record.DeBartolo, who previously served as senior vice president and assistant general manager of the club, was named interim general manager on Sunday night. He will now oversee all baseball operations, including the MLB draft.Miguel is highly respected in our organization and in baseball.
