Carlos Narváez will undergo knee surgery, but his recovery is expected for Spring Training

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez will undergo surgery on his left knee. Despite this, he is expected to be fully recovered for the start of Spring Training. The news was announced by the chief baseball operations officer, Craig Breslow, during the end-of-season press conference, following Boston’s elimination in the playoffs against the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series. Breslow explained that the surgery will be performed to repair Narváez’s knee meniscus.

There were a couple of times during the season when he got inflamed, one of them quite evidently, so he missed a bit of time,” Breslow told reporters, referring to a period in early August when Narváez was out due to the injury. “He deserves a lot of credit for his willingness to play despite this, even at a time when others might have withdrawn, because he felt he was committed to helping the team.

Breslow added that the procedure should be straightforward and no complications are anticipated. Boston acquired Narváez in an unusual trade with the Yankees on December 11, sending right-handed pitcher Elmer Rodríguez-Cruz to New York in return. The 26-year-old catcher became one of the team’s biggest surprises, batting .241 with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in 118 games.
