Left-handed pitcher Wade Miley has chosen to opt out of his minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds, making him a free agent. Miley, 38, is recovering from Tommy John surgery. This season, he went 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Louisville.
The Reds had until Sunday to make a decision on Miley, who is seeking an opportunity as a starter. The team could have brought him up and placed him in the bullpen.
Miley, who was an All-Star with Arizona in 2012, holds a record of 108-99 with an ERA of 4.07 in 310 starts and seven relief appearances during 14 seasons in the Major Leagues. In April of last year, he was 0-1 with an ERA of 6.43 in two starts for Milwaukee before getting injured. Francona indicated that Miley could return to the organization if he doesn’t find a better option in free agency.I appreciate the way Nick handled the situation with him.

In addition, Francona announced that infielder Jeimer Candelario will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday. Candelario, 31, is recovering from a lower back injury.
Candelario will play some games in Arizona before moving his rehab to Louisville.Candelario is batting .113 (9-for-80) with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 22 games. He signed a three-year, $45 million contract before the 2024 season. It seems like it helps him to be in a more controlled environment in Arizona, where he can see some pitches, and then, when he gets some rhythm, he can go to Triple-A.
