David Stearns Acknowledges Frustration Over Mets’ Offensive Drought
New York Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns admitted his frustration with the team’s recent offensive struggles. Despite the situation, Stearns expressed confidence that the slump will not last long. These statements came before Friday’s game, where the Mets fell 3-2 to the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. This loss marked the team’s ninth in the last 10 games. The losing streak has affected the Mets’ position, who are now 3.5 games behind the Philadelphia, leaders of the NL East, although they still maintain a 3.5-game lead over the Cincinnati in the race for the National League wild card.In the last nine games, the Mets have failed to score more than three runs on six occasions. In the last three games, all lost, the team has only managed a total of 10 hits. Stearns also expressed his support for hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes.“Clearly, everyone is frustrated. The players are frustrated. Sometimes, I have felt frustrated too. But I believe this is a good offensive team. I trust the offense we have and I am sure we will see positive results in the future”.

The Mets arrived in Milwaukee after a game where they only managed one hit, a home run by Juan Soto in the ninth inning, in a 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. In Friday’s game, Soto hit another home run in the first inning against Milwaukee pitcher Brandon Woodruff. Starling Marte added a solo home run in the second inning, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. However, the Mets managed only three more hits for the rest of the game, two of them in the ninth inning. Marte doubled and was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run.“I trust our hitting coaches. I think we have good hitting coaches. They have a track record of helping to lead and put together high-quality offenses.”

The Mets rank 15th in the majors in runs (501), 23rd in batting average (.239), 15th in on-base percentage (.318), 14th in slugging percentage (.404), and 13th in OPS (.722). Last year, the Mets ranked seventh in runs (768), 12th in batting average (.246), eighth in on-base percentage (.319), 10th in slugging percentage (.415), and ninth in OPS (.734), earning a playoff spot and reaching the National League Championship Series. Mars, through an interpreter, expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to overcome this difficult moment.“Overall, in the middle innings, we struggled to generate opportunities,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commented. “Woodruff pitched seven innings, and we know what that bullpen is like. But I think we had good at-bats against Megill, especially the last two guys. You have to turn the page.”

Stearns and Mendoza attribute the current situation to the Mets’ hitters’ history, trusting that their performance will soon improve.“We haven’t been hitting well in the last few games, but this is a team that keeps working hard, that has a lot of talent. Right now, we’re going through a low point in the season, but I know and trust that this team will be able to turn the situation around because we work hard, give 100% day after day and show up.

Stearns highlighted the Mets hitters’ attitude in the face of adversity, showing confidence in their ability to overcome this situation.“They’re really good players and they’ve shown it before,” Mendoza said before Friday’s game. “It’s just, when you’re going through this, it gets loud, you know? But when you look at our players, when you look at that clubhouse, there’s a lot of talent in there. They’ll come out of it.”
Carlos Mendoza
“I think if you walk into our clubhouse, I suspect you’ll feel frustration, but you probably won’t feel panic and you’ll probably also see a really good level of preparation and focus. When I see those things, it gives me confidence that we’re going to get out of this.”
