Mets Designate Frankie Montas for Assignment
The New York Mets have decided to designate right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas for assignment this Tuesday. The team still owes Montas $17 million, corresponding to the last season of a two-year, $34 million contract.
Montas, who will turn 33 in March, underwent Tommy John surgery on September 9 and is expected to miss the 2026 season.
Given his contractual and health situation, it is anticipated that Montas will go through waivers and be released.
Simultaneously, the Mets selected the contract of outfielder Nick Morabito, coming from Double-A Binghamton, protecting the 22-year-old from the upcoming Rule 5 draft.
Montas signed with the Mets as a free agent in December and had a 3-2 record with a 6.28 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances, making his last appearance on August 15.
Throughout his ten seasons in the Major Leagues, Montas has a 47-48 record with a 4.20 ERA, having played for the Chicago White Sox (2015), Oakland (2017-22), the New York Yankees (2022-23), Cincinnati (2024), Milwaukee (2024), and the Mets.
Morabito, for his part, batted .273 with 6 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 49 stolen bases in 60 attempts this year for the Rumble Ponies, accumulating 108 steals in the last two seasons.
