Mets Designate Frankie Montas for Assignment

The New York Mets have designated right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas for assignment this Tuesday. Montas, who is in the final season of a two-year, $34 million contract, will receive $17 million. Montas, who will turn 33 in March, underwent Tommy John surgery on September 9 and is expected to miss the 2026 season. Due to his contract and health status, it is anticipated that he will go through waivers and be released. The Mets also selected outfielder Nick Morabito’s contract, coming from Double-A Binghamton, protecting the 22-year-old player from next month’s Rule 5 draft. Montas signed with the Mets as a free agent in December and had a 3-2 record with a 6.28 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances, making his last appearance on August 15. In his 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, Montas has a record of 47-48 with an ERA of 4.20, playing for the Chicago White Sox (2015), Oakland (2017-22), the New York Yankees (2022-23), Cincinnati (2024), Milwaukee (2024) and the Mets. Morabito batted .273 with 6 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 49 stolen bases in 60 attempts this year for the Rumble Ponies and has stolen 108 bases in the last two seasons.
