Mets Bolster Bullpen: Craig Kimbrel and Austin Barnes Arrive on Minor League Contracts

The New York Mets have bolstered their roster with the addition of two experienced veterans, Craig Kimbrel and Austin Barnes, who signed minor league contracts with an invitation to spring training.

Kimbrel, a renowned relief pitcher, will seek to add his tenth team in his illustrious career. The nine-time All-Star arrives after a season split between the Braves and the Astros, where he recorded an ERA of 2.25 in 14 appearances. In addition, the 37-year-old player had a brief stint with the Rangers organization, participating in 24 games with their Triple-A affiliate.

Throughout his 16 seasons in the Major Leagues, Kimbrel has proven to be a dominant force. With a record of 56-48, he has played for the Padres, Red Sox, White Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, Phillies, and Orioles. His impressive career places him fourth among relievers with 1,282 strikeouts and fifth in saves with 440.

In addition to Kimbrel, the Mets also secured the services of catcher Austin Barnes, who also signed a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Barnes, 36, batted .214 in 13 games with the Dodgers last season.

In other moves, the Nationals claimed left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady from the Mets, while infielder Mickey Gasper was designated for assignment.

Lovelady has a record of 5-13, three saves, and an ERA of 5.35 in six seasons in the majors.
