The San Diego Padres activated Jackson Merrill from the injured list this Tuesday, after the outfielder missed a month of action due to a left hamstring strain.
Merrill was in the lineup as the fourth batter against the Yankees and played in center field, after joining the team on Monday. His return comes after participating in a couple of rehabilitation games with the Double-A team, San Antonio, over the weekend.
“Jackson is a really special player who missed a good deal of time, both on and off the field, and we’re excited to have him back,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said.

Merrill was placed on the injured list on April 8, a week after signing a nine-year, $135 million contract, following a standout rookie season. During that period, he was selected for the National League All-Star team and finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting, behind Pittsburgh pitcher Paul Skenes.
Before going on the injured list, Merrill was batting .378 (14-for-37) with three home runs and 10 RBIs in eight games.
To make room for Merrill, catcher Luis Campusano was sent to Triple-A El Paso. Campusano participated in three games and did not hit in six at-bats.
