PITTSBURGH – Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, propelling the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday.

McCutchen’s hit to left center field, against pitcher Cal Quantrill, was his sixth of the season and the number 241 in his 12 seasons with the Pirates. This historic home run allowed him to surpass Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, placing him in third place on the franchise’s home run list.

Willie Stargell (475) and Ralph Kiner (301) lead the list, while Barry Bonds is in fifth place with 176.

This was McCutchen’s 325th career home run, putting Pittsburgh ahead 4-0. Throughout his 17-year career, McCutchen has also played for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Yankees, and the San Francisco Giants.

In 2015, McCutchen was awarded the Roberto Clemente Award, which is given annually to the player who best represents baseball through his extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field. McCutchen became the second Pirate to receive this prestigious honor, following in the footsteps of Stargell in 1974.
