Diamondbacks Secure James McCann for One Season

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached a one-year, $2.75 million deal with veteran catcher James McCann, it was announced this Friday. The contract includes the possibility of obtaining up to an additional $500,000 in bonuses, depending on how long McCann remains on the team’s active roster. McCann, 35, joined the D-backs in June and demonstrated consistent performance, with a batting average of .260, 5 home runs, and 17 RBIs. In addition, his work with the team’s young pitchers, such as Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt, was highly valued. McCann is expected to assume the role of backup to Gabriel Moreno, who batted .285 with 9 home runs and 40 RBIs last season. Moreno has suffered injuries that have prevented him from playing in several stretches over the last two seasons. McCann could earn an additional $100,000 after 50 days on the active roster, an additional $125,000 after 75 and 100 days, and $150,000 after 125 days. The catcher, who was an All-Star in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, is preparing for his thirteenth season in the Major Leagues. Throughout his career, McCann has a batting average of .242 and has hit 97 home runs.
