James McCann and Diamondbacks Agree to Contract
The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached a one-year, $2.75 million deal with veteran catcher James McCann, it was announced this Friday.
The agreement includes the possibility of obtaining up to an additional $500,000 in bonuses, depending on how long McCann remains on the team’s active roster.
McCann, 35, joined the Diamondbacks in June and offered a solid performance, batting .260 with 5 home runs and 17 RBIs. He also proved to be a good support for the team’s young pitchers, including Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt.
McCann is likely to serve as a backup to Gabriel Moreno, who batted .285 with 9 home runs and 40 RBIs last season. Moreno has been out with injuries for various stretches of the last two seasons.
McCann would earn an additional $100,000 after 50 days on the active roster, $125,000 each after 75 and 100 days, and $150,000 after 125 days.
McCann, who was an All-Star in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, will play his 13th season in the Major Leagues. Throughout his career, he has a batting average of .242 and has hit 97 home runs.
