Mariners Surprise the Blue Jays in the First Game of the ALCS

Toronto – In an exciting American League Championship Series encounter, the Seattle Mariners achieved an impressive 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, securing home-field advantage in the first game. After a grueling 15-inning victory on Friday night and with a delayed trip, the Mariners showed their resilience and determination. The Mariners’ opener, Bryce Miller, had an outstanding performance, pitching six solid innings. Cal Raleigh’s home run and Jorge Polanco’s timely hitting, hero in the previous game, contributed to the victory.

We’ve talked about how resilient these guys are.

Dan Wilson, Mariners Manager
The game presented a contrast in the physical condition of the starting pitchers. Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays, had more than a week of rest, while Miller arrived with only three days of rest. George Springer of the Blue Jays hit a home run in the first inning, but Miller recovered, limiting the Blue Jays to one run and two hits in six innings. Miller became the first pitcher since David Price in 2018 to record at least six innings and allow one run or fewer in the postseason with three or fewer days of rest. Cal Raleigh hit a home run to tie the game, silencing the home crowd. Jorge Polanco drove in a run for the Mariners with a single, securing the lead. Polanco added another RBI later.

He has been incredible. He has been the heart and soul during this last month.

Cal Raleigh
The Blue Jays couldn’t respond, ending the game with a poor offensive performance. Andres Muñoz closed the game for the Mariners in the ninth inning. Game 2 is scheduled for Monday.
