MLB Doesn’t Expect More Restrictions on Prop Bets, But Watches Closely
The Major League Baseball commissioner, Rob Manfred, reported that the league does not foresee new restrictions on prop bets after recent measures taken by sportsbooks. These measures include a $200 limit on individual bets and the prohibition of including these bets in parlays, with the aim of mitigating manipulation. These statements were made during the team owners’ meetings. The league is investigating an alleged manipulation scheme involving Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. Both face charges of fraud, conspiracy, and bribery, related to the manipulation of individual pitches to benefit bettors. Prop betting limits were announced the day after these charges were made public. Members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation have expressed concern about this “new integrity crisis” in American professional sports and have requested information about the alleged scheme. Manfred assured that the league will respond fully and promptly to the Senate investigation. In addition, he stressed that the limitations announced this month represent a significant change that should reduce incentives for any inappropriate behavior. Clase and Ortiz could face a lifetime ban for their alleged involvement. The league’s investigation is ongoing. The betting scandal tarnishes the good moment of MLB, which came from a season with high ratings, culminating in an exciting seven-game World Series. Manfred also noted that competitive balance, especially the disadvantage of small-market teams versus large-market teams, remains a concern for the league, especially with the collective bargaining agreement expiring on December 1, 2026. Labor issues have been addressed in the owners’ meetings, although Manfred did not offer details on the discussions. The ability to monitor betting activity is fundamental. It is crucial to discern inappropriate patterns. We understood the prop betting issue from the start and I am pleased that we have acted. At this time, we are prepared to move forward with the current rules.

Manfred’s priority is to prevent a work stoppage from causing the loss of games in 2027.We have a large number of fans who have expressed their opinion on the subject of competitive balance and, in general, we try to pay attention to our fans. Therefore, it is a topic of conversation.

No game has been lost since I got involved as a baseball employee and my goal is to complete the next one, keeping that record intact. There is a lot of work to be done between now and then, but that is my goal.
