Francisco Lindor Drops in the Mets’ Batting Order

Amid a losing streak for the New York Mets, star shortstop Francisco Lindor was removed from the leadoff spot in the batting order on Wednesday night. After having been the first in the lineup in 191 consecutive games, Lindor was placed in the second spot as designated hitter for the second game of a doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers. Lindor, who is going through an offensive slump, had a difficult night, going 0-for-4. The Mets only managed two hits in the 7-2 loss in the first game. In his last seven games, Lindor is batting .069, with only two hits in 29 at-bats and one walk. His performance has notably declined since June 15, with a .133 average in 15 games. His batting average has fallen from .289 with an OPS of .858 on June 7 to .255 with an OPS of .766 before the second game of the doubleheader. Brandon Nimmo was moved to the leadoff spot, a role he held before Mets manager Carlos Mendoza moved Lindor to the first spot in May 2024. Mendoza’s decision to move Lindor to the leadoff spot previously resulted in an improvement in the player’s performance and a boost for the Mets. Lindor finished as runner-up in the National League MVP voting last year and the Mets made a surprising playoff run. This season, both Lindor and the Mets started off well, but the team (48-38) had lost four straight games and 14 of 17 before the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.
