Shea Langeliers, Athletics catcher, made MLB history by hitting three home runs in a game against the Washington Nationals, marking a milestone in his career.
Langeliers: An Elite Catcher
In a memorable night, Langeliers became the fourth catcher in Major League history to achieve two three-home run games. The feat occurred in the Athletics’ 16-7 victory over the Nationals. The player, who batted as the first in the batting order for the first time, didn’t take long to demonstrate his power. He hit a home run against MacKenzie Gore to open the game. He followed up with another home run at the start of the fifth inning, this time against Orlando Ribalta. Langeliers closed out his magical night with another home run in the seventh, against Andry Lara. With this performance, Langeliers joins Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, and Travis d’Arnaud as the only catchers with two three-home run games in their careers. In addition, Langeliers is the only catcher in MLB history to hit three home runs from the leadoff position, and his season home run total rises to 22. The 27-year-old player also connected on a double in the eighth inning, finishing the night with 5 hits in 6 at-bats, three RBIs, four runs scored, and a total of 15 bases reached. These figures represent personal records in hits and runs scored, and the total bases equal the most for a catcher in a game since 1900. This outstanding performance occurred less than two weeks after his teammate, Nick Kurtz, hit four home runs and tied the MLB record with 19 total bases in a game against the Houston Astros. Langeliers and Kurtz are the first pair of teammates since 1900 to have a game with 15 or more total bases in the same season. The Athletics achieved a season record with 24 hits. Brent Rooker and JJ Bleday each got four hits, marking the first time the Athletics have had three players with four or more hits in a game since 1979.I was trying to be aggressive in the strike zone tonight and get the guys fired up in the first inning.
