Athletics Rookie Nick Kurtz Placed on Observation for Oblique Discomfort

Athletics’ young player, Nick Kurtz, is under daily evaluation due to discomfort in his right oblique, as reported by manager Mark Kotsay on Saturday. Kurtz, who felt discomfort during Friday’s batting practice, underwent an MRI that revealed no injury, according to Kotsay. The player did not participate in the second game of the series against the Rangers. The situation arose when Kurtz, after receiving a walk, was running towards the plate after a double by Brent Rooker in the third inning. At that moment, apparently, the discomfort intensified, forcing him to slow down. Although he managed to score to tie the score 2-2, he immediately went to the locker room accompanied by the team’s medical staff.

There is no tension in the muscle tissue, but Kurtz is dealing with the pain threshold.

Kotsay did not specify when Kurtz might return to action. “We hope to have him back as soon as possible,” he added. So far this season, Kurtz is batting .308, with 23 doubles, 2 triples, 27 home runs, and 70 RBIs. Additionally, Kurtz is one of three players in the Major Leagues who have hit four home runs in a single game this season. On July 25, against the Astros, Kurtz became the first rookie in MLB history to achieve this feat, tying the record for total bases with 19. In that same game, he also hit a double, a single, and added six RBIs.
