George Kirby Exited the Game After Being Hit in the Face by a Ball
SEATTLE – Mariners right-handed pitcher George Kirby had to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles after being hit in the face by a 102.7 mph line drive.With two outs in the fifth inning, Kirby threw an inside fastball to Orioles third baseman Ramón Urías, who hit the ball directly towards center field. The ball hit Kirby in the face, and he immediately left the field with blood coming out of his mouth.
The Mariners’ medical staff quickly attended to Kirby. He did not return for the sixth inning, although he had already thrown 95 pitches before his departure.Urias was retired on the play, as the ball bounced off Kirby’s face towards first base, where it was fielded by Seattle’s first baseman, Rowdy Tellez.
