Ha-Seong Kim, Braves Shortstop, Down with Injury

The Atlanta Braves shortstop, Ha-Seong Kim, will be out of action for four to five months due to surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right middle finger, according to the team. The Braves indicated that Kim suffered the injury in Korea and underwent surgery on Sunday in Atlanta. Kim’s return to Atlanta with a one-year, $20 million contract this offseason was a priority for the club.

When the agreement was finalized in December, general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he expected Kim to return to the production levels he had with the San Diego Padres and that he wanted him for the long term.

Kim, 30, has a .242 batting average with 52 home runs and 217 RBIs for the San Diego Padres (2021-24), Tampa Bay Rays (2025), and Atlanta. Last season, he batted .234 with 5 home runs and 17 RBIs for the Rays and the Braves, who claimed him on waivers on September 1. Kim didn’t debut in the season until July 4 due to surgery on his right shoulder at the end of 2024. Kim’s signing meant that Mauricio Dubon, acquired from Houston in November, would likely have a utility role instead of being the starting shortstop, but those plans could change with Kim’s absence.
