WASHINGTON – James Wood shined with two two-run home runs, including a decisive hit in the 11th inning, for the Washington Nationals to break their 11-game losing streak, defeating the Colorado Rockies with a score of 4-3 on Thursday. With one out and automatic runner Riley Adams on third, Wood connected on a 1-0 pitch from Seth Halvorsen (1-2) to center field, hitting his 20th home run. This victory represents only the Nationals’ third win in 17 games this month. This was the outfielder’s fourth multi-home run game in his second year in the Major Leagues. The young player achieved this feat twice last September and finished his rookie season with nine home runs. The game began with a single by CJ Abrams in the top of the fourth inning against Rockies rookie starter Chase Dollander, followed by Wood’s first home run to center field, putting the score at 2-0 in favor of the Nationals.Colorado managed to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth inning against starting pitcher Trevor Williams. Orlando Arcia singled with one out and advanced to third base after Luis García Jr. caught a fly ball and, while trying to surprise Arcia at first, his throw went astray, allowing him to advance.Jordan Beck hit a double that drove in a run, and Mickey Moniak added a run-scoring single.Ryan McMahon singled and reached third base thanks to a double by Brenton Doyle, forcing Williams out with one out in the sixth inning. Cole Henry came in to get the last two outs of the inning and keep the score tied.Williams allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Ryan Loutos (1-0) allowed a single to Michael Toglia in the 11th inning before retiring the next three batters, earning his first career win.Dollander allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. The key moment of the game was when Henry came in with one out and runners on second and third in the sixth, striking out Sam Hilliard and Arcia to maintain the tie.A notable statistic is that eight of Colorado’s 17 wins have been this month.
