Athletics’ Gunnar Hoglund Undergoes Hip Surgery, Ends Season

The Athletics’ right-handed pitcher, Gunnar Hoglund, underwent surgery on Friday to address a hip injury, ending his season. The news comes after his debut in the Major Leagues last month.

Hoglund, 25, suffered a setback while on the 15-day injured list due to an impingement in his left hip. The surgery was performed by Dr. Marc Phillipon in Colorado. The Athletics reported that the pitcher is expected to recover in time for spring training.

Hoglund was selected by Toronto with the number 19 pick in the 2021 amateur draft. Before undergoing Tommy John surgery before the draft, he was projected as a possible top 10 pick.

He was traded to the Athletics when the Blue Jays acquired All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman in March 2022.

Hoglund made his Major League debut on May 2, pitching six brilliant innings in the 6-1 victory against Miami. In six starts with the Athletics this year, he had a 1-3 record with an ERA of 6.40.
