Ben Lively Undergoes Tommy John Surgery
Cleveland Guardians pitcher Ben Lively underwent surgery Wednesday morning to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, also known as Tommy John surgery.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas, who also repaired the 33-year-old player’s right elbow flexor tendon.
Lively will have a postoperative checkup on Thursday before moving to the Guardians’ spring training complex in Goodyear, Arizona, to begin his rehabilitation. He is expected to be out of action for 12 to 18 months. The pitcher left the May 12 game against the Milwaukee Brewers due to a right flexor tendon strain, after pitching three scoreless innings. He felt some discomfort after a start in Washington on May 6, but didn’t feel it again until he threw some warm-up pitches in the game against the Brewers.
In the current season, Lively had a 2-2 record with an ERA of 3.22 in nine starts. He allowed only one run in 14 innings in three May starts.
