Goldschmidt Laments Key Error in Yankees’ Defeat

In a retrospective analysis, Paul Goldschmidt, a renowned infielder, admitted that his decision to attempt a risky throw to home plate was a mistake that cost the Yankees dearly. Instead of securing the out at first base, the player opted for an unbalanced throw that allowed Trea Turner to score the tying run. Goldschmidt’s error occurred during the seventh inning of the game against the Phillies, marking the Yankees’ ninth error in just four games. The Yankees’ 12-5 loss left them 5.5 games behind the leaders of the American League East, the Toronto.

“I was playing inside and he hit it a little to my right, softly, and I knew it was going to be a close play at first and I tried to get him at home. Looking back, I should have made the play and gone to first base there. I think even if I make that perfect throw, Turner probably still would have beat it,” Goldschmidt explained.

With Turner on third and Kyle Schwarber on second, Nick Castellanos hit a 42-foot grounder at 61.4 mph to Goldschmidt. The player moved to his right and made an off-balance throw, which went over the glove of catcher Austin Wells, allowing Turner to score the tying run, Schwarber to advance to third, and Castellanos to second. Goldschmidt acknowledged that his attempt was too aggressive and resulted in the team conceding another base. This error was Goldschmidt’s third of the season and the 54th for the Yankees. Two pitches later, Luke Weaver allowed a three-run home run to J.T. Realmuto, which broke the tie. Manager Aaron Boone commented that, although the play was risky, there was a possibility that something unexpected would happen. Weaver, for his part, has given up five home runs in his last 12 appearances. New York’s relievers have allowed 10 runs and have an ERA of 4.28, ranking 23rd among the 30 teams. The Yankees have an ERA of 6.20 in July, the worst mark in the Major Leagues. The Yankees, who have struggled recently, are in a challenging situation, but manager Boone is confident that the team can improve. After a streak of five consecutive victories, New York now has a 3-6 record. The Yankees have a 21-27 record since leading the American League East with a 35-20 start, committing 30 errors during that period. Despite the challenges, catcher Austin Wells believes the team can turn things around.
