Zack Gelof will miss the rest of the season due to injury
The Athletics’ second baseman, Zack Gelof, will undergo surgery on his left shoulder next week, which will prevent him from playing for the rest of the season, according to manager Mark Kotsay announced on Saturday. Gelof suffered a dislocated shoulder on Friday night while attempting to catch a ground ball in the Athletics’ victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 25-year-old player had already gone through a similar situation during spring training, where he fractured a bone in his right hand and had to undergo surgery. He was not activated from the injured list until July 4th.In the 30 games he played this season, Gelof batted .174 with two home runs. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday. In addition, the Athletics also placed left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation, which also ends his season. On the other hand, infielder Max Muncy (fractured right hand) was activated from the 10-day injured list, and veteran right-handed pitcher Scott McGough was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. This is really unfortunate for Zack. But he will have the entire offseason to rehabilitate, recover, and be ready for spring training.
