Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick was out of the lineup for a second straight night due to a knee issue, but he expects to be ready to play again later this week.

Frelick left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs with left knee discomfort after getting hurt while swinging. He underwent an MRI that revealed no significant damage, and the right fielder, NL Gold Glove winner in 2024, stated he felt much better on Tuesday morning.

“From what the trainers are saying, it sounds like they’re going to try to hold me out until the off day to get an extra day and be ready for Friday,” Frelick said before Tuesday night’s game against the Houston Astros.

The Brewers complete a three-game series with the Astros on Wednesday afternoon before starting a six-game road trip on Friday in Tampa Bay.

Frelick said he felt a pull behind his left knee after batting in the second inning of Sunday’s game. He briefly remained in the game before being replaced in the fourth inning.

“My whole body twisted, but the peak of my foot stayed on the ground. My foot almost came out of the shoe,” he explained. “I tried to play another inning, but my knee was failing me. … Based on my previous meniscus issues, I think we avoided a serious situation.”

The player, selected in the first round of the 2021 draft, mentioned that he underwent two meniscus surgeries on that knee while playing for Boston College, but had not had other problems until Sunday.

Frelick indicated that the MRI showed no tears, but rather “a lot of inflammation.” However, he claims to feel better now.

“Yesterday I came and it wasn’t much better,” Frelick said. “This morning, I woke up and it was incredible.”

Frelick, 25, is batting .297 with an on-base percentage of .381, one home run, nine RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 35 games. This follows a 2024 season in which he batted .259 with an on-base percentage of .320, two home runs, 32 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 145 games.

His absence has tested the depth of a garden that already has Garrett Mitchell and Blake Perkins on the injured list. Mitchell last played on April 25 due to a left oblique strain. Perkins has yet to debut in 2025 while recovering from a fracture in his right shin.
