Former Red Sox All-Star Mike Greenwell dies at 62

Greenwell, who finished second in the voting for the American League Most Valuable Player in 1988, was diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer, according to reports.

In addition to his successful sports career, Greenwell entered politics, being appointed commissioner of Lee County in Florida in 2022 and re-elected in 2024. In the sports world, Greenwell is remembered for his outstanding performance with the Red Sox. He made two All-Star appearances, won the Silver Slugger award in 1988, and was a key player for the team.

His Major League debut was in 1985, and he was part of the American League champion team in 1986. In 1987, he established himself as the starting left fielder, demonstrating his worth on the field. Greenwell finished his career with a .303 batting average, 130 home runs, 726 RBIs, and 80 stolen bases.
