Mark Teixeira Seeks a Seat in Congress for Texas
Former Major League Baseball (MLB) player Mark Teixeira has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives. The news was confirmed on Thursday, marking a new chapter in the former athlete’s career. Teixeira, known for his time with the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees, will compete for the seat of District 21, currently held by Republican Chip Roy. Roy has confirmed that he will not seek re-election, as he is running for the position of Texas Attorney General. In his statement, Teixeira expressed his intention to defend former President Trump’s “America First” agenda, as well as Texas families and individual freedom. Teixeira’s baseball career, which spanned 14 seasons, includes three All-Star Game appearances, five Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers, and a World Series title with the Yankees in 2009. Teixeira and his family returned to Texas in 2021 after his retirement from the sport. During his announcement, Teixeira pledged to collaborate with Trump to secure the border and end the “radical woke indoctrination.” In the Republican primary for the district, another contender is already present: Daniel Betts, who ran unsuccessfully for district attorney of Travis County last year. The 21st Congressional District encompasses an area with a strong conservative tendency west of Austin and San Antonio. Teixeira made his candidacy public a few days after Republicans in the state legislature approved a redistricting map designed to favor the party in the 2026 elections.“As a proud, lifelong conservative Texan who loves our country, I am ready to fight for the principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional,” Teixeira declared in a statement posted on X.
