ARLINGTON, Texas – Nathan Eovaldi’s impressive streak with the Texas Rangers came to an end, but the team secured a crucial victory, vital for their season aspirations. After a standout performance since July, with a 6-0 record and an ERA of 0.47 in six starts, Eovaldi had a tough night on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He allowed three home runs, reaching season highs with five runs allowed and eight hits in five innings. Although the Rangers were down 5-1 when he was replaced, they managed to come back and win 7-6 in 10 innings, ending a four-game losing streak.

What matters at the end of the day is that the team wins. Especially at this point in the season.

Eovaldi
In the game, the 35-year-old pitcher struck out three batters, walked one, and hit two. He didn’t get a decision, as Rowdy Tellez hit a home run to tie the game in the ninth inning, and Jake Burger drove in the winning run in the tenth.

Nate has been very good. He showed that, sometimes, you don’t have total control, but the team recovered. The team did a great job, and we achieved victory with an incredible effort from everyone.

Bruce Bochy, Manager
Eovaldi, who had given up only six runs in his previous seven starts, and half of which were in the same game, performed below his standards. In his last 14 games, he had only allowed two home runs.

His previous outing, where he threw eight innings allowing only one hit against the New York Yankees, marked the thirteenth time in 14 games that he allowed one or zero runs. A feat comparable only to that achieved by Bob Gibson since 1900, in the 1968 season, where he won the Cy Young Award and the MVP.

I need to make better pitches, focus on my strengths and what has worked for me all year. Today I strayed a bit from that.

Eovaldi
Although his overall effectiveness increased from 1.38 to 1.71, it still remains below the MLB leader, Paul Skenes (1.94), and the American League Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal (2.35), with 2.35. Eovaldi, who missed most of June due to elbow inflammation, has pitched 116 innings in the Rangers’ 120 games. Pitchers need to pitch one inning per team game to qualify as league leaders. The Diamondbacks scored early, with Tyler Locklear hitting a home run in the second inning. Jake McCarthy opened the third with a double, followed by Corbin Carrol’s home run, and Ketel Marte was hit by a pitch before Geraldo Perdomo’s home run, putting the score at 5-0.

My splitter wasn’t as good as before. I threw a lot of pitches at the top of the strike zone, where a lot of damage was done. I put myself at a disadvantage in some counts. In Perdomo’s at-bat, I threw a fastball in the middle. Those two-run homers hurt.

Eovaldi
Eovaldi benefited from double plays in the fourth and fifth innings to avoid more runs. The Dbacks were coming off a 17-hit game against Colorado, where they set a franchise record with nine consecutive hits in the fifth inning, all with two outs. Only four MLB pitchers since 1920 have had a lower ERA than Eovaldi’s 1.38 in the first 19 starts of a season, with Bob Gibson’s 1.06 being the lowest. This is Eovaldi’s third season with the Rangers, who gave him the $100,000 bonus for being an All-Star, despite not having been selected for the American League team last month.
