DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced the firing of their manager, Bud Black, this Sunday, a day after suffering a 21-run defeat to the San Diego Padres.
The decision comes after a particularly difficult start to the season for the Rockies, who hold the worst record in Major League Baseball with a 7-33, despite having won on Sunday against the Padres with a score of 9-3, thus avoiding the sweep and breaking an eight-game losing streak.
Warren Schaeffer, who served as third base coach, will assume the role of interim manager for the remainder of the season. Clint Hurdle, hitting coach, will act as interim bench coach. In addition to the change in direction, the Rockies also fired bench coach Mike Redmond.
The team will begin a series of away games on Monday night, facing the Texas Rangers.
Bud Black managed the Rockies for nine years, accumulating a record of 544-690 during his time with the team.
