Dominican Prosecution Requests 5 Years in Prison for Wander Franco

The Dominican Republic Prosecutor’s Office has requested a five-year prison sentence for Tampa Bay Rays player Wander Franco, who is facing charges of sexual abuse. The request was filed this Monday, in relation to the case involving a minor, 14 years old at the time of the alleged crimes. According to the court, the prosecution believes there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate a relationship between Franco and the minor, which lasted for four months. Furthermore, it is alleged that the player transferred significant sums of money to the minor’s mother to obtain her consent.

The prosecution presented “convincing” and “conclusive” evidence in previous hearings.

Regarding the minor’s mother, the prosecution has requested a 10-year prison sentence, accusing her of sexually trafficking her daughter. Documents presented to the judge last year revealed that Franco, through his mother Yudelka Aybar, would have transferred one million pesos (approximately $17,000 dollars) to the minor’s mother on January 5, 2023, allegedly in exchange for her consent. Franco’s Major League career was interrupted in August 2023, when he was in his third season. Previously, he had signed an 11-year, $182 million contract in November 2021. He is currently on the restricted list of Major League Baseball.
