The Arizona Diamondbacks have reinforced their pitching staff by signing free agent Anthony DeSclafani and placing him on the MLB roster.
DeSclafani, 35, recently parted ways with a minor league deal with the New York Yankees. In his time with the Triple-A Scranton team, he recorded an ERA of 4.50 in five starts.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced before Sunday’s game against San Diego that the experienced right-handed pitcher will operate from the bullpen.
As a corresponding move, Bryce Jarvis was sent to Triple-A Reno. In addition, to make room on Arizona’s 40-player roster, Justin Martinez was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Martinez will undergo surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament and will miss the remainder of the season.
The Diamondbacks have also lost Corbin Burnes, who underwent Tommy John surgery, and A.J. Puk, who has been out of action since April 17 due to elbow inflammation. Puk was removed from his rehabilitation program last week after experiencing elbow discomfort and is consulting about possible surgery.
DeSclafani has a 54-56 record with a 4.20 ERA in his career. In 2021, he had a 13-7 mark with a 3.17 ERA for San Francisco, but his last appearance in the Major Leagues was in July 2023. He was out all last season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery on his throwing arm.
