The Arizona Diamondbacks have bolstered their roster with the addition of catcher James McCann, after being released by the Atlanta Braves. The veteran 35-year-old player joined his new team on Monday for the game against the Chicago White Sox.
Simultaneously, the Diamondbacks designated Aramis Garcia for assignment.
McCann signed a one-year contract for the minimum salary of $760,000 while in the Major Leagues and $180,000 if he plays in the minors. If he remains in the majors for the rest of the season, with 99 days remaining, McCann would receive $404,516.
The agreement with the Braves was finalized on April 8. After being released on Sunday, he was able to sign with Arizona. In 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he batted .297 with six home runs and 30 RBIs.
McCann, selected in the second round of the 2011 draft by Detroit, has 11 seasons in the majors, playing for the Tigers (2014-18), White Sox (2019-20), Mets (2021-22), and Orioles (2023-24). Throughout his career, he has a batting average of .241, with 92 home runs and 373 RBIs.
He was selected for the All-Star Game in 2019. That season, playing with the White Sox, he reached career highs in hits (120), home runs (18), and RBIs (60).
