SAN FRANCISCO – Rafael Devers, the new batter of the San Francisco Giants, prepares to face his former team, the Boston Red Sox, just five days after being traded. Despite the situation, Devers seeks to leave the past behind.
The player shared some thoughts on his experience in Boston, especially in relation to his willingness to play first base with the Giants, something he didn’t accept during his time with the Red Sox.
“I put up good numbers in Boston and I feel like I earned some respect. If they had asked me at the start of spring training, yes, I would have played first base.”
Rafael DeversDevers explained that, at that moment, the Red Sox did not have a clear need at first base, as Triston Casas did not suffer an injury until late in the season. However, the damage was already done, which apparently led to the surprising transfer of the player.
Now, after only three games with San Francisco, Devers faces his former teammates. Despite the situation, he maintains a positive attitude.
“What happened, happened. But they are still my friends.”
Rafael DeversDevers had the opportunity to greet his friends on Thursday, but until Friday afternoon he hadn’t spoken with manager Alex Cora. He is confident that this will happen.
When asked about his former manager, Devers preferred not to go into detail.
“I don’t want to talk about the past. I have nothing good or bad to say about Alex, I just want to leave everything behind.”
Devers described the week as “long”, but he feels more relaxed and happy in his new team. So far, he has performed 3-11 with two walks and four strikeouts, being a key player for the Giants.
Regarding his position at first base, Devers indicated that he will play when he feels completely prepared.
“It’s not a position I’m going to learn overnight.”Rafael Devers saluda al entrenador de bateo de los Medias Rojas, Peter Fatse. El nuevo bateador de los Gigantes se enfrenta a su antiguo equipo solo cinco días después de su sorpresivo traspaso desde Boston. Jeff Chiu/APDevers reiterated that he does not wish to speak about the past and prefers to focus on the future.
