Ketel Marte: Future Defined for the Diamondbacks Star

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen has revealed that a resolution is expected “soon” regarding the future of All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte, although a trade remains unlikely.

I haven’t figured it out yet, but this isn’t going to drag on. We need to focus on our offseason.

Mike Hazen
Hazen, when referring to the exact deadline for a resolution, added that the team needs to focus on other areas heading into the offseason. His “instinct” was always that a Marte trade wouldn’t happen, and it seems that’s the most likely direction. This will allow the Diamondbacks to focus on other needs. Mars, linked to several teams during this offseason, could be key for Arizona to address its need for starting pitching. The 32-year-old player is a three-time All-Star and has a career batting average of .281, with at least 25 home runs in three consecutive seasons. Furthermore, his contract is attractive: he has five years left and $91 million plus an option for the sixth year for $11.5 million, which makes him especially valuable to potential suitors. Hazen also commented that, although there have been advances in conversations with other teams for Marte, nothing has come close to what the Diamondbacks are looking for. The general manager added that he has informed other teams that the conversations will end soon. The team needs to start focusing on its position player group more specifically. This is crucial for defining the team’s direction and possibilities for next season.
