Ketel Marte on the Restricted List: A Tough Moment for the Diamondbacks Star

The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte on the restricted list before Friday’s home game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The decision is due to “a personal matter,” according to manager Torey Lovullo. This announcement comes after a concerning incident. The Mars residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, was the victim of a robbery this week while the player was in Atlanta for the MLB All-Star Game.

“He asked for some time to reflect and get back to being in a position to play and be a force for us,” Lovullo said. “It’s a situation that will be handled day-to-day. I’ve had limited contact with him… We all know what he’s going through. It’s unfortunate.”

The theft of numerous personal items and jewelry was reported. No one was in the house at the time of the incident. The police are conducting an investigation.

“As I said yesterday, there are some savages out there who don’t respect people’s privacy,” Lovullo said. “He retreats a bit when he gets upset and I respect that space and I’m going to give it to him. He just needs a couple of personal days right now.”

In the All-Star Game, Marte, in his third All-Star game, hit a run-scoring double in the National League’s victory on Tuesday night. In the current season, Marte has a batting average of .290 with 19 home runs and 40 RBIs in 68 games. In addition to the situation with Marte, the Diamondbacks made other moves to their roster. They promoted catcher Adrian Del Castillo and right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards from Triple-A Reno, and signed infielder Sergio Alcantara as a free agent. On the other hand, they sent infielder Tristin English to Reno and transferred catcher Gabriel Moreno (fractured right index finger) to the 60-day injured list.
