Diamondbacks Secure James McCann for One Year

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached an agreement for the return of catcher James McCann on a one-year contract for $2.75 million, according to sources close to the team.

The agreement, which has not yet been officially announced, includes the possibility of McCann earning up to $500,000 in bonuses.

McCann, 35, joined the Diamondbacks in June and had a solid performance, batting .260 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. His experience was valuable to the team’s young pitchers, such as Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt.

McCann is expected to be Gabriel Moreno’s backup, who batted .285 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs last season. Moreno has suffered injuries that have caused him to miss playing time in the last two seasons.

McCann, who was an All-Star in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, will play his 13th season in the Major Leagues. Throughout his career, he has a batting average of .242 and has hit 97 home runs.
