Gabriel Moreno and Pavin Smith: Last-Minute Scratches for the Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno was scratched at the last minute from Friday’s game against the Kansas City Royals due to right forearm discomfort, according to manager Torey Lovullo.

Lovullo told the media that the 2023 Gold Glove winner had been dealing with the injury for a few days and would undergo imaging tests on Friday night. In addition, first baseman Pavin Smith was also ruled out of the game due to discomfort in his left forearm, although he did not require examinations.

Moreno, 26, is expected to be the D-backs’ primary catcher this season, but he has struggled to stay healthy over the last two campaigns. In 2025, he batted .285 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 83 games.

Smith, 30, is expected to split his time between first base and designated hitter. Last year, he recorded a .258 batting average with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.
