CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have reached a two-year agreement with right-handed reliever Phil Maton, according to sources close to the negotiation. The news, which confirms multiple reports, bolsters the Cubs’ bullpen ahead of next season.

Maton, 32 years old, had an outstanding performance in 2025, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. During that time, he achieved an ERA of 2.79 in 63 games, demonstrating his ability to dominate on the mound.

The pitcher, originally from Illinois, has a solid track record in MLB, with an ERA of 3.98 in nine seasons. His career began in 2017 with the San Diego Padres, and since then he has played for seven different teams, accumulating experience and versatility.

Phil Maton possesses a diverse arsenal that includes a cutter and a curveball, pitches he uses frequently, in addition to a sweeper and a sinker. During the past season, the pitcher recorded 81 strikeouts in 61 and one-third innings, demonstrating his ability to dominate hitters.

The Cubs are in the process of rebuilding their bullpen, following the departure of several key players who became free agents, including left-handed pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar, as well as right-hander Brad Keller.

With the arrival of Maton, the Cubs seek to strengthen their bullpen, especially in the final innings. Although Maton is not a closer, his experience as a setup man is valuable, as he has accumulated 10 saves throughout his career.

The contractual agreement includes a club option for the 2028 season, giving the Cubs the possibility of extending the relationship with the pitcher.
