Garrett Crochet Shines for the Red Sox against the Yankees

The Boston Red Sox relied on Garrett Crochet for a crucial matchup. Facing the New York Yankees in the fight for the first American League wild card spot, Crochet received a considerable lead in the first inning and managed to match his season record with 12 strikeouts in six innings. This resulted in Boston’s victory with a score of 6-4 on Sunday night, securing the last game of the three-game series.

We already talked about how it was a win-or-win game, just trying to do everything possible. We were trying to get back on track. The offense came out strong at the beginning and I tried to do what I could to maintain the lead.

The Red Sox acquired the 26-year-old left-handed pitcher in a trade with the Chicago White Sox during the offseason. They quickly secured him with a $170 million six-year contract during the first week of the season. The contract will take effect next season. The Red Sox are 1.5 games behind the Yankees, who lead the wild card standings. Boston is in second place. The team with the best wild card hosts the runner-up in a three-game series. On Sunday, Boston scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning after Crochet struck out two batters in the top half.

It was huge. It set the tone early in the top of the first inning. Scoring six runs, it felt like a million with Crochet pitching.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora explained that the team managed Crochet’s workload after the All-Star break so that their star pitcher would have more energy in the final stretch of the season.

For all those questions about workload and velocity, I think the last release was 99 mph. We take care of him so he takes care of us. Hopefully the rest of the month and the next will be a big part of it.

Crochet is aware that his team counts on him.

Especially now that we’re nearing the end, I don’t want to have any regrets in mind in the coming weeks. I’m just trying to do everything I can to put us in a good position.

When asked what he thought about facing the Yankees in the postseason, Crochet responded:

It would be great because it would mean we’re in the postseason. I think that’s the main focus. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing.
