In a night full of emotions at Yankee Stadium, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run home run in the second inning, giving the New York Yankees the lead against the Boston Red Sox. This home run not only meant a change in the score, but also a personal milestone: the 100th of his career in his sixth season in the Major Leagues. However, Chisholm’s mind was elsewhere. The player revealed that he was playing with a broken heart, following the death of his best friend on Saturday.

I felt like it was something unreal. I lost my best friend yesterday, so today was a different day, especially with home run number 100 coming today and all.

Chisholm, visibly affected, preferred not to go into details about what happened, but admitted to having gone through difficult moments in the last few hours. The cameras captured the emotional embrace between Chisholm and Aaron Judge after hitting his 100th home run against Red Sox pitcher Dustin May. In the eighth inning, Chisholm added a second home run, totaling 24 for the season and tying his personal record set in 2024. Trent Grisham also shone with two home runs, reaching his personal best of 25 for the season. The Yankees thus avoided being swept in the series and broke their streak of eight consecutive losses against their rival. Chisholm and Grisham are two of the five Yankees players with at least 20 home runs this season, a figure that leads the majors.

I always want to play against Boston. I feel like the energy in the game, the way our fans come, the way their fans come, I feel like it’s a really intense game. Every game against Boston here has felt like a playoff game. So, for me, I know that’s exactly what we’re going to have and we’re going to need to prepare for the playoffs and I know a lot of guys here feel it too.

The Yankees will begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Monday, sitting half a game behind the Red Sox for the first wild card spot and six games behind the leaders of the American League East, the Toronto Blue Jays. The last series of the regular season between the Yankees and the Red Sox will be played in Boston, starting September 12, and could have significant implications for the playoffs. The Yankees have a 2-8 record against Boston this season.

Definitely not the weekend we wanted to have, especially after a very good road trip. But, anyway, a good win.
