Chicago Cubs Secure Phil Maton for Two Years
The Chicago Cubs have reached a two-year agreement with right-handed reliever Phil Maton, according to sources. The deal bolsters the team’s bullpen for the upcoming seasons.
Maton, 32 years old, had a standout season in 2025, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. During that time, he achieved an ERA of 2.79 in 63 games.
The pitcher, originally from Illinois, has an ERA of 3.98 in nine seasons in the Major Leagues, playing for seven different teams. His MLB debut was with the San Diego Padres in 2017.
Maton utilizes an effective combination of pitches, including cutter and curveball, which he throws with similar frequency, in addition to a sweeper and sinker. Last season, he accumulated 81 strikeouts in 61 and one-third innings.
The Cubs are looking to rebuild their bullpen, following the departure of several players who became free agents.
The contract includes a club option for 2028.
