Chicago Cubs Secure Phil Maton for Two Years

The Chicago Cubs have reached a two-year agreement with right-handed reliever Phil Maton, according to sources. The agreement confirms previous reports about the pitcher’s arrival. Maton, 32 years old, had a standout season in 2025, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. During that time, he achieved an ERA of 2.79 in 63 games. The Illinois native has maintained an effectiveness of 3.98 throughout his nine seasons in MLB, having played for seven different teams. His debut in the Major Leagues was with the San Diego Padres in 2017. Maton’s pitching repertoire includes a cutter and curveball, which he uses with equal frequency, as well as a sweeper and sinker. Last season, he accumulated 81 strikeouts in 61 and one-third innings. This incorporation is crucial for the Cubs, who are looking to reinforce their bullpen after the departure of several key players who became free agents, including left-handed pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar, and right-hander Brad Keller. Maton is shaping up to be a luxury reliever, more than a closer, as he has achieved 10 saves in his career. The contract includes a club option for the 2028 season.
