Matt Chapman Suspended After Incidents in the Game

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman has been suspended for one game by Major League Baseball. The suspension stems from an altercation with Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland during Tuesday night’s game. Chapman, in addition to the suspension, has been fined an undisclosed amount. The player has appealed the suspension and, therefore, is eligible to participate in Wednesday night’s game in Colorado. Also fined in the incident were Giants shortstop Willy Adames and designated hitter Rafael Devers. Chapman, Adames, and Freeland were ejected from Tuesday night’s game after a confrontation that originated after a two-run home run by Devers in the first inning. After Devers hit the home run, Freeland reacted to the player’s celebration, yelling at him as he approached first base. This caused several players to head to the infield. The referees intervened to restore order before assessing the situation and announcing the ejections. Devers waited at first base while the umpires deliberated and then ran around the bases several minutes after hitting the home run.
