NEW YORK – The New York Yankees announced on Tuesday the designation for assignment of veteran right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco.

Yerry de los Santos was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Carrasco’s place on the roster.

Carrasco, who signed a minor league contract in the offseason to provide depth to the rotation, was not projected to be one of the team’s five starters. However, he began the season in the rotation due to injuries to Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt during spring training.

He appeared in eight games, six as a starter, and posted a 5.91 ERA. His last appearance was on Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits in three innings out of the bullpen.

Carrasco, 38, has a lifetime ERA of 4.18 in 16 seasons in the Major Leagues, a career that began in 2009 with Cleveland at age 22. He spent his first 12 seasons with Cleveland, and finished fourth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2017. He was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2019 and returned to pitch after three months.

De los Santos, 27, pitched two scoreless innings for the Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader on April 21. He has a 1.74 ERA in 10 relief appearances for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

The Yankees also announced that infielder DJ LeMahieu’s rehab assignment has been moved from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A. LeMahieu began the season on the injured list due to a calf injury.

He could be activated for his debut this season this weekend when the Yankees face the Athletics in West Sacramento.

In addition, right-handed pitcher Scott Effross (hamstring) began a rehabilitation assignment with the Yankees’ rookie-level team.
