Cal Raleigh Sets New Home Run Record for Catchers

Seattle Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh has made baseball history. On Sunday, he hit his 48th and 49th home runs of the season against the Athletics, setting a new home run record for a catcher in a single season. This achievement surpassed the previous mark set by Salvador Pérez in 2021. The feat occurred in a game where the Mariners defeated the Athletics with a score of 11-4.

With all the people standing and cheering, I didn’t even notice. It was a really cool moment to take my hat off. That’s not something you get to do every day.

Raleigh’s impact goes beyond the numbers. His manager, Dan Wilson, highlighted the magnitude of the achievement, stating that it’s difficult to fathom how great it is, considering the legends he has surpassed. Raleigh’s record also marked his ninth multi-homer game of the season, surpassing Mickey Mantle for the most multi-homer games by a switch-hitter in a season. Raleigh’s first home run tied the record, while the second set the new mark for catchers. Both hits generated “MVP” chants from the home crowd. Raleigh hit a 448-foot home run and another one of 412 feet. These were Raleigh’s 39th and 40th home runs while playing as a catcher this season. Only four other players in Major League history have hit at least 40 home runs in a season while primarily playing catcher.

I think we’re seeing that he’s starting to set a standard for nobody else who’s done this. And that’s the newsworthy part of this, it’s getting to a point where you can’t compare it to anyone. He just keeps pushing that standard higher.

With 31 games remaining in the regular season, Raleigh also has an excellent opportunity to surpass the franchise home run record of 56, set by Ken Griffey Jr. This achievement solidifies Raleigh as a prominent figure in baseball history, and his impact continues to grow.
