Oswaldo Cabrera Hopes to Return to the Yankees This Season

Less than a month after undergoing surgery on his fractured left ankle, Oswaldo Cabrera still holds out hope of returning this season to help the New York Yankees.

“They told me it’s a small possibility,” Cabrera commented before the Yankees concluded a three-game series against Cleveland on Thursday. “It’s a small possibility, but I trust it. I am a very optimistic person and I feel that good things can be on the way. We are going to work to return soon.”

Cabrera currently uses a scooter to keep his left leg elevated and wears an orthopedic boot. According to his statements, he will continue using the scooter for at least another month before starting to walk with the boot.

The player underwent surgery on May 15. At the time, manager Aaron Boone indicated that it was unlikely the utilityman would return this season.

“I don’t necessarily think we expect it, but you never know how he heals and what the next few months will look like,” Boone said. “I know one thing about Oswaldo: I know there’s no better person who loves all this as much as he does, and I know he’ll put everything into the rehab and healing process, and we’ll see where we’re at as it unfolds.”

Cabrera was carted off the field after injuring himself on a slide in the ninth inning of New York’s victory over Seattle on May 12, with a score of 11-5. He was injured while stretching his leg to touch the base after scoring on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge.

Before being transported by ambulance, Cabrera received support on his left ankle. He was taken to a hospital with the team’s athletic trainer, Tim Lentych, and was visited by several teammates, including Judge and Anthony Volpe.

In his fourth season, Cabrera has become a regular player in the Yankees’ lineup. So far this season, he is batting .243, with a home run and 12 RBIs.
