Walker Buehler Returns to Action with the Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox activated right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday night’s game against the New York Mets.
Buehler hadn’t pitched for the Red Sox since April 26 due to problems in his right shoulder. He was removed from his next start and tests revealed he had bursitis in his shoulder.
The 30-year-old player threw a three-inning simulated game on Thursday and indicated that he felt good and was ready to return.
In his first campaign with the Red Sox, Buehler has started six games. His record is 4-1 with an ERA of 4.28 and 29 strikeouts against nine walks in 33 2/3 innings.
In a corresponding move, Boston sent right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi to Triple-A Worcester. The 32-year-old made two appearances and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Boston.
Before signing with Boston as a free agent last December, Buehler belonged to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. During his career, Buehler has undergone two Tommy John surgeries, the last in 2022, which prevented him from playing the entire 2023 season and made his debut in 2024 in May.
The last time Buehler completed a full season without issues was in 2021, when he made 33 starts, the most in the Major Leagues that season. He had a 16-4 record with a 2.47 ERA and was selected to the All-Star Game for the second time with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers selected Buehler with the 24th overall pick of the 2015 MLB draft.
