MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have suffered another injury in their pitching staff, generating uncertainty about the return of star closer Trevor Megill, as the playoffs approach. The most recent news is the inclusion of José Quintana on the 15-day injured list due to a strain in his left calf. The veteran pitcher was injured during the fourth inning of the 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.Quintana, who was fighting for a postseason rotation spot, was injured while running to cover first base. Although he managed to reach the base before José Fermín for the last out of the inning, he was seen limping slightly as he headed to the dugout. Subsequently, Quintana left American Family Field with a walking boot, on his way to an MRI.The Brewers decided to place Quintana on the injured list after evaluating his calf on Wednesday. To cover Quintana’s absence, right-handed reliever Nick Mears was reinstated from the 15-day injured list.Meanwhile, concern persists for Megill, who is dealing with a right flexor strain and has been on the injured list since August 27, initially for what was considered a minor injury.Megill, with a 5-3 record, a 2.54 ERA and 30 saves, was scheduled to pitch before Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, but his recent pitching sessions haven’t gone as expected, according to manager Pat Murphy.

It wasn’t great. It wasn’t revelatory, but he didn’t want to push further.

Murphy also indicated that Megill’s expected return has been delayed.

We all want him to pitch before the postseason.

Pat Murphy
When asked if that was unlikely, the Milwaukee manager did not give a concrete answer.

I have hope.

When talking more about Megill’s injury, Murphy said that “it’s not medically okay.”

Your health is paramount. He is working on the process of trying to hurry and that is not always the best for a flexor strain. We are disappointed with the situation.

Pat Murphy
Murphy was cautious when talking about the possibility of Megill forcing the injury in the playoffs, if it came to that.

It is not recommended. It needs some time to heal. Unfortunately, we don’t have that time.

In a positive note for the Brewers, Robert Gasser, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in June 2024, pitched 2 2/3 innings without allowing runs for the Triple-A Nashville team on Wednesday.

I think they’ll see it soon.

Furthermore, Murphy added that Gasser could play a role from multiple entries.Right-handed pitcher Chad Patrick, called up from Nashville on September 9, struck out three batters in the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Angels.

Chad Patrick pitched well last night, that’s encouraging. Just trying to get a feel for what we could do in these last 11 days to make (the bullpen) useful at the end.
