Alex Bregman will exercise his opt-out with the Red Sox
The prominent third baseman, Alex Bregman, is expected to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to sources close to him. This decision, anticipated by many, does not rule out a possible return of the experienced player to Boston. However, for now, Bregman joins the list of free agents for the second consecutive season. In the previous offseason, the 31-year-old player didn’t find a team until the start of the preseason, when he agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox in mid-February, which included opt-out options after the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Bregman had a promising start in Boston, batting .299, with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs, before suffering a quadriceps injury that kept him off the field between May 24 and July 11. He finished the season with a .273 average, 18 home runs, and 62 RBIs. Off the field, he was recognized for his veteran leadership on a young Red Sox team, which was eliminated in three games by the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series. After the team’s elimination in the postseason, Red Sox baseball boss Craig Breslow avoided commenting on whether contract talks were already underway with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras.Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story also has an opt-out in his contract, after signing a six-year, $140 million deal with the team in March 2022. If Story exercises his player option, the Red Sox will have the right to exercise the club option and make the deal worth $160 million over seven seasons.“Obviously, Alex has the right, as stipulated in his contract, to choose to leave, and he will do what is best for his family,” Breslow stated on October 6. “At the same time, I will not pass up the opportunity to talk about his contributions on the field, in the clubhouse, for the coaching staff and the front office. In every conversation we’ve had, I think I’ve learned something about how his impact and influence have rubbed off on his teammates.”
