Bregman Progresses in His Recovery, but Return Still Distant

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora reported this Saturday that Alex Bregman feels good after starting a running program at Fenway Park, although his return from the right quadriceps injury is still distant.

The progression is going well. Let’s see how he feels tomorrow and we’ll make decisions from there, but obviously we are still far from him starting with the progression in baseball.

Bregman has been out of action since May 23 due to a significant strain, similar to the one he suffered in his left quadriceps in 2021, which cost him 58 games with the Houston Astros. The player started the race program on Thursday and will rest on Sunday before resuming activity next week.

Bregman, who signed with the Red Sox as a free agent for a three-year, $120 million contract during the offseason, was batting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Marcelo Mayer, who hit his first home run in Friday’s 9-6 loss, has started at third base 10 times, but was not in the lineup against left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and likely won’t be against left-hander Carlos Rodón on Sunday.

The Red Sox recorded nine losses in 13 games since Bregman’s injury.

Cora also mentioned that Kutter Crawford will likely throw a bullpen session at the end of next week, as he prepares for a minor league rehab assignment. On Friday, Cora had mentioned the possibility of a bullpen session this weekend.

Crawford hasn’t pitched in a game this year due to patellar tendinitis in his right knee. Cora had indicated on Monday that the 29-year-old right-handed pitcher would begin a rehab assignment this week, but the next day he referred to pain in Crawford’s wrist. On Friday, he stated that there is no structural damage.
